Bike Programs

PROGRAMS WE OFFER

Summary

There are many ways to get involved with the Rich City Rides community. Currently, we offer the following programs.

Coming Soon: Bike Rodeos

The Everybody Rides Program :

The Rich City Rides Everybody Rides Program is an incentive program providing refurbished bikes at no cost. Need a bike? Just fill out a Bicycle Request Form. Join one or more rides, and you get to keep the bike forever. We provide new bicycles and helmets to youth and families during the holidays. Rich City Rides has gifted more than 3,000 people of all ages with bicycles so far. During the 2020 Holidays, with the help of the Richmond Rotary Club, Retrospect Bikes, and our own wonderful individual donors, we were thrilled to be able to present 110 children in need with free brand new bicycles and helmets. It was a beautiful holiday despite the challenges we all faced from the pandemic.

Community Care Wellness Rides

Family social rides are one of our most treasured and popular weekly events. These radically inclusive, all ages and all ability rides are held every Sunday morning. We meet at the Unity Park Bike Hub at 10:00 a.m. to sign in and saddle up; we roll out by 11:00 a.m. and return by 1:00 p.m. If you don’t have a bike, we’ll provide one for you.

As part of our Everybody Rides initiative, encouraging the use of bicycles to create greater health, sustainability and lower Greenhouse Gas Emissions, participating in at least one Self-Care Sunday Ride earns you a free refurbished bike. For each engagement participants register on Eventbrite and attend, participants may qualify to receive incentives, including, Stickers, Custom Rich City Rides Pins, helmets, bikes and other great opportunities.

When children and young people participate in these rides, they earn additional time points for engaging in healthy group activity while learning the basic rules of the road and how to properly use safety equipment. Children are required to wear helmets and they earn extra time points when the bring family members and friends to join the ride. We follow all up to date pandemic safety protocols.

Rich City Rides provides bikes and safety equipment to all who need them with the caveat that they must stay until the end of the ride.

Our highly successful Social Rides have directly engaged over 27,000 community members over 8 years. We include trips through Richmond Greenway bike trail, the neighboring Ohlone Greenway bike trail, the Richmond Marina Bay Trail, and new projects like the John F. Kennedy Park Pump Track and the Richmond Wellness Trail to promote healthy activity as alternative medicine.

We provide more than just bikes; we build mechanical skills, self-confidence, friendships and strong community ties. By activating Richmond’s public spaces and creating a sense of stewardship, we uplift the city, making it safer, healthier and more equitable. This transformative program only exists because of the generous support from people like you.

Kennedy High Bike Club

In 2019 the Kennedy High Bike Club will expand its membership and its presence on campus and in the surrounding community. Many thanks to our sponsor The San Francisco Foundation.

Bike Repair Workshops

We hold Bike Repair Workshops every Friday from 5 pm to 7 pm. This is the one day out of the week where we lend out tools in-shop for community members to use to repair/maintain their own bikes (parts are not included). We also have a professional mechanic onsite to answer questions for free. Don’t hesitate to come and check out this community workshop!

Commuter Cyclist Program

On top of creating more and more commuter cyclists and introducing people to the benefits and joy of riding a bike every day, our Commuter Cyclist Program provides bikes, bike repairs and safety equipment to the entire community. We have a special focus on those who use bikes as their only means of transportation.

For some commuters, using a bike is not a choice, but a necessity. It is how they get to and from work, the store and home every day. In 2015 alone, we’ve provided over 100 bikes to members of our community, including those who are most vulnerable and underrepresented amongst cyclists. Along with bikes, we also provide free bike repair workshops and an opportunity to ride and learn how to ride safely.
